10 Tips and Tricks to Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle

When it comes to dieting, every young woman seems to have a little story, usually a story that ends with not reaching their goal. Recently however, I got the impression that a lot of people decided to change their life; focusing on a healthy life, instead of trying another one of the crazy “how to lose 10 pounds in 5 days” diets. This is a topic very close to my heart, actually:

After I got diagnosed with hypothyroidism about three years ago (a condition that makes you gain weight, among other symptoms), it took me two years and endless dietary fails to come to the realization that I needed to change my entire lifestyle and eating habits permanently. This is now almost one year ago and my lifestyle change emerged into a hobby and passion. I managed to lose about 15-17 pounds (I don’t weigh myself, though) and got the shape I wanted to regain.

I thought I would share a few tips and tricks with you today, in order to help or set you thinking about on how to maintain a healthy life.
1. This is not a temporary diet, but a permanent change.

Be aware that changing to a healthier diet should be a permanent change, in order to get yourself to the state you want to be in and to actually keep it. This is not about being skinny, but healthy and it is not about feeling hungry at any time during the day. Therefore you should not change your eating habits in a heartbeat, but adjust slowly to new routines. It is important that you like what you eat, otherwise you will start to resent it after a while.
2. Learn to see food as necessary fuel and not as mean calories.

This mindset will help a great deal with getting interested in nutrition and what ingredient contains maximum nutrients. Once you start seeing white pasta as empty carbs and start replacing it with nutritionally rich whole-grain pasta, you are on the right track.
3. Include some sort of exercise in your weekly schedule.

A lot of people seem to complain about this part of a healthy life, but I personally think that if you want to be healthy and also fit, physical exercise is indispensable. But even though a lot of people automatically think of jogging and gym, there are so many options out there. It is all about finding what you enjoy doing. How about swimming, yoga or belly dancing? If you are not sure, just try out different courses until you find your sport.

Quick tips and tricks:
4. Find a way to healthify your favorite comfort food by changing a few ingredients.

5. Be sure to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner, in order to keep your metabolism going.

6. If you feel like snacking in between, stick with one snack that fits into your own hand, e.g. an apple or handful of nuts.

7. Your main intake of carbs should be at breakfast and lunch, since it recharges your energy batteries and that is when you need it most.

8. Check local universities for sport courses, they are usually very diverse and cheap, even for non-students.

9. If you are not one to known for incredible self-control when it comes to exercising, take a friend to keep each other in check.

10. Use the internet: Find healthy recipes and likeminded people and get in touch. The blogging community can be very helpful and supportive.

I hope these help, do you have a rule that you live by? Lou x

  1. Stephie I’m a big fan of the app myfitnesspal. I log everything I eat and drink, as well as the exercise I do and so I’m more aware of what I’m putting into my body, rather than blindly stuffing myself! It’s amazing when u see in front of you what you’re eating just how much you want to treat your body better. And it so has a nutrition function so that you can see when you’re not giving yourself enough fat or protein or carbs in your diet! And the best bit is… When u exercise, it increases the amount of calories you should be eating!!!! Thoroughly recommended :) xxx

  4. I just moved to France for a few months and I have to say I find it hard to eat healthy with all those tempting pastries! At the same time, I really want to enjoy my time here, and take advantage of those great sweet things. I know I will have to be better at making healthy meals, cannot go on eating ham and cheese pastry everything any longer!
